    Snippets of my mundane life

This is one of the very few movies that I would watch more than once and still enjoy it. Fairly predictable storyline, but it was saved by its great cast! Hilarious!

Some women can't wait to "adopt" the surname of their husbands-to-be ... like an award or achievement ... totally oblivious to the fact that in Australia, about 45-50% of the first marriages ended up in divorce. AND according to research, the divorce rate among those who eventually remarried is even higher. I'm not sure about the statistics for Singapore, but I'm pretty sure there are plenty of closet divorces (ok I just made up that term) i.e. couples who are living separate lives, but are still legally married.

A successful marriage requires a lot of hard work, trust, compromising, love, understanding and patience. "... and they live happily ever after" - such effortless union only exists in fairy tales. For those who are married, work hard! For those who are thinking of getting married, best of luck!

Finally for women whose husbands/boyfriends/partners have strayed:
    "Don't get mad. Get everything."

2005 has been a fairly good year for me. Like any other years, there were ups and downs. But that is life. 2006 will be an interesting year for me and I'm looking forward to it. If I still maintain this blog, you may get to read about it.

Anyway, I hope 2006 will be full of joy, love, surprises and opportunities for you.

    Baby baby
Random thoughts of Bluey at Friday, December 30, 2005 7:52 pm | Permalink
I went to visit my ex-colleague and her newborn baby boy. The 2-day-old sweetie appeared to be a good and quiet baby. While the baby next door screamed his/her lungs off, he continued to sleep.

I'm very happy for my ex-colleague and her husband. They will be good parents. According to my ex-colleague, her husband has been the one changing the baby's nappies. That is a good sign.

    Can money buy me happiness?
Random thoughts of Bluey at Thursday, December 29, 2005 8:39 pm | Permalink
My answer has always been, "Money can't buy me happiness. But it can buy things that will make me happy."

I got myself a tshirt while shopping for the gift for the baby :P . I can't resist the temptation because it says "You can't buy happiness. But you charge it":

Here is the gift. Babies' clothings are soooooooo adorable. However, relatively limited range for baby boys.

<---- The wrapping paper and the card. I like the wrapping paper ... very cute.

    Got a pressie
Random thoughts of Bluey at Tuesday, December 27, 2005 7:52 pm | Permalink
My colleague, who keeps a fish tank in the office, gave me a gift today ... for feeding her fishes. Isn't she sweet? It is nice to be appreciated once in a while.

ok ... I think I am supposed to soak this cat in the water and it will grow to full size in 72 hours.

I was quite worried that the smallest fish would get eaten up by the bigger ones because I wasn't in to feed them over the christmas holidays. And here are the fishes. It was hard to take a decent picture of the fishes. I had to lure them to my side with food. They are pretty smart.

    Of Boredom
Random thoughts of Bluey at Monday, December 26, 2005 2:37 pm | Permalink
    Found a hilarious quote:
"When I get real bored, I like to drive down town and get a great parking spot, then sit in my car and count how many people ask me if I'm leaving."
    Steven Wright

Alright, I'm not that bored yet.

"Wait, I just remembered something! You're boring and my legs work."
David Spade as Finch on Just Shoot Me
This reminded me of another quote which I loved when I was a teenager:
"If I promise to miss you, would you go away?"

    Christmas 2005

Santa brought me rain this Christmas ... Woohoo! Forgot to drive my car for a "wash". Duh!

I won't be doing any crazy boxing day shopping this Christmas 'cos I'm stuck at home working on my thesis :( It is going to be all worthwhile ... I try to convince myself.

Count down: 3 more weeks and about 15, 000-20,000 words to go

    Of Lee Hsien Loong
Random thoughts of Bluey at Tuesday, December 20, 2005 9:13 am | Permalink
Despite of my many complaints about Singapore government (which is the People's Action Party) and its policies, I think Lee Kuan Yew is a very intelligent man. Like many other Singaporeans, I know Lee Hsien Loong as son of Lee Kuan Yew and the "chosen one". Instead of usual ranting, this blog provides another view point of our Prime Minister which I find interesting. I didn't realise that Lee Hsien Loong graduated from Cambridge and speaks more than 3 languages (just like his father)! Well, it is going to take more than a blog to change my opinion about the People's Action Party. We'll wait and see.

What I would like for this Christmas
Random thoughts of Bluey at 11:24 am | Permalink
    • Everyone is able to respect one another regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and nationality
    • Children are able to play happily and safely in playgrounds without parents worrying about paedophiles
    • Everyone/every country is entitled to their own opinions and belief systems
    • Rain and more rain for places that need it badly

Merry Christmas to all my friends and family. May this Christmas bring you lots of joy and happiness! And for those who are enjoying a cool and white Christmas, I'm not talking to you :p

Too many thoughts ... too little time
Random thoughts of Bluey at Saturday, December 17, 2005 9:37 pm | Permalink
Dumbledore, in the Harry Potter's series, has a pensieve (a shallow stone basin with odd runes and symbols carved around the edge). I WANT one! Previously, when I have too many thoughts in my head, I always wished that I could take my head off and put it on my shoulder. Alright, it sounded a bit gross. All my friends stared at me when I said that.

I think having a pensieve is an excellent idea. I would be able to siphon the excess thoughts into the pensieve using a wand and I could re-visit my thoughts (which would be linked to my memory) anytime I want. How cool is that!

    Deadline Set
Random thoughts of Bluey at Wednesday, December 14, 2005 8:40 am | Permalink
I have set myself a deadline to finish the first draft of my thesis - 15 January 2006. Only 4.5 weeks to go! I am positive the goal is achievable if I maintain my current momentum. As I started to panic a few days ago, many fleeting negative thoughts went through my mind e.g., what if the markers think my whole research is crap and want me to redo! What if they think the scope is not big enough! What ifs!

My thesis supervisor has been wonderful. She thinks that I have done an amazing job with my research and she is positive that I could finish in 4.5 weeks' time.

I am almost ready to run some statistical analyses on my data set. I haven't done any statistical analysis since my honours year in 1996 so I am quite anxious about it. My flatmate kept throwing these statistical jargons, such as 1-way/2-ways ANOVAs, MANOVAs and regressions, at me. I know the terms, but I can't remember when to use them. Anyway, my thesis supervisor is so excited about my research that she is going to help me with the statistical analyses this Friday. Phew! I hope we will find what we are looking for.

So ... the one who promised to proof read my thesis ... the 'introduction' and ' method' sections will be on their way to you very soon :) I'm sure you are thrilled!

Lunches for the next few days
Random thoughts of Bluey at Sunday, December 11, 2005 5:38 pm | Permalink
It is Sunday - time to cook my lunches. Stir fry chicken with vegetables is the only dish on the menu.

Chicken strips were marinated with 5 spices, salt, pepper, fish sauce and hot & spicy seasoning for at least 4 hours.

Smells really good. Looks ok. Tastes not bad.

I do try to eat healthily in my own way :)

    My room is air-conditioned now
Random thoughts of Bluey at Saturday, December 10, 2005 3:13 pm | Permalink
I finally bought a portable air-conditioner this morning. I can't work in my room when it is soooo hot. I have no idea how I survived the past 2 summers in Brisbane.

Like I always say, if a problem can be solved by $, it is no longer a problem.

Now my room is cool and cosy. I am a happy camper :)

Many thanks and hugs for the person who drove me to the store, convinced the sales person to give me a discount, lugged the package up to my unit and installed it for me.

    Rainbow
Random thoughts of Bluey at 3:07 pm | Permalink
I saw a rainbow just outside my unit few weeks ago.

To me, rainbow signifies hope :) It reminds me of this song too:

    Over The Rainbow
    (Arlen-Harburg)
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high
    There's a land that I heard of
    Once in a lullaby

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
    Really do come true

Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
    Where troubles melt like lemondrops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Bluebirds fly
    Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
    Where troubles melt like lemondrops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Bluebirds fly
    Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

    If happy little bluebirds fly
    Beyond the rainbow
    Why, oh why can't I?

In an ideal world, I believe children ...
Random thoughts of Bluey at 11:48 am | Permalink

... should be raised in a loving, caring and stable environment
... should have parents who work together as a team to parent them
... should be hugged and kissed everyday
... should be told that they are being loved regularly
... should be shown how to love self and others
... should be taught manners (e.g., to queue up, to say "please" and "thank you" and to let others to get out of the train/bus first before rushing in) and to show respect
... should be educated on topics such as drugs (including alcohol and nicotine) and sex
... have to learn that they can make wise (not right or wrong) choices throughout their lives. They can choose to either retaliate or ignore the bully. They can choose to either say "no" to drug or succmb to peer pressure. They can choose either to do it or not to do it.
... should be able to enjoy their childhood to the fullest

In an ideal world, there will be less cases of child abuse and probably less adults in long term therapy.

Summer is here in Brisbane! It is hellishly (did I just make up that word?) and unbearably hot as there is no air-conditioning at my place. I am seriously thinking of getting a portable air-conditioner for my room.

    About Capital Punishment in Singapore
Random thoughts of Bluey at Thursday, December 01, 2005 9:48 am | Permalink
On the topic of capital punishment in Singapore, Singapore's High Commissioner to Australia, Joseph Koh, said, ""This is something that is supported by the overwhelming majority of Singaporeans." Erm ... what was that based on? Who was the overwhelming majority? Show me the statistics! Was there a poll while I was away (and I am still away)? What did I miss?

Argh ... I get very annoyed when people make sweeping statements like this.
